Welcome to Hwa Chong Institution, College Mathematics Department Website
As the Principal Consultant since June 2010, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a remarkable group of closely knit colleagues who, united by their passion in teaching mathematics and in mathematical research, join together to create an environment where enthusiasm and creativity can flourish.
Mathematics is an excellent vehicle for the development and improvement of a person's intellectual competence in logical reasoning, spatial visualisation, analysis and abstract thought. The development of a highly skilled scientifically- and technologically-based manpower to meet the challenges of the 21st century requires a strong grounding in mathematics. As such, it is no coincidence that Mathematics is a pre-requisite for many of the courses at the tertiary level, in local and overseas colleges and universities.
The approach to mathematics at the college level is distinctively different from that of secondary school. In Hwa Chong, we want to bring students through an enriching and challenging journey in further developing their mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. Through teachers to peers and from peers to peers interactions, creating opportunities to explore mathematics beyond the classroom, and organising special programmes to allow collaborative work with students and professors from universities, we hope students will view mathematics beyond just an abstract study of numbers and symbols.
Mathematics is a very important subject, not only because over 1100 of our students are taking a Mathematics subject each year, but also for the reason that learning Mathematics gives us many options later in life. For Mathematics at the pre-university level, students will learn to analyse, formulate and solve different types of problems, individually or as a group. They will also learn to work with data and perform statistical analyses. Here, our teachers take steps to prepare students in successfully writing the GCE 'A' level H1, H2 and H3(MOE)* mathematics examinations, as well as in helping students to attain some life skills that will better prepare them for their future educational careers and the world of work.
Every year, our students have turned in amazing results for Mathematics at the GCE 'A' level examination. For example, on average, every 3 out of 4 students at Hwa Chong Institution obtained Grade A in H2 Mathematics since 2007 the sitting. These remarkable achievements are made possible only because of the long hours of sheer hard work and determination put in by both the spirited students and the dedicated teachers.
There is no short cut in the journey of learning - the journey to the end point, and how we walk the journey, depends on how we prepare ourselves and the interactions between ourselves and the people around us. As we look forward to the coming year, significant challenges and opportunities lie ahead. Upcoming staff movement will affect the character of the Department. Changing profile of our students will affect our way of teaching and in turn will affect the way the students are going to learn. However, our effort in preparing our students well will be maintained and expanded. We have an obligation to help our students to realize their potential, and to prepare them, to be ever ready, for the present and for the future.
